The UA Teaching Academy will host a national speaker webinar with Dr. Mary-Ann Winkelmes on Transparency in Learning and Teaching (TILT).

TILT is a small, evidence-based adjustment to teaching, learning, advising and planning practices that reduces barriers to inclusion and understanding while helping students recognize the value of their learning. Research shows that TILT can increase students’ sense of belonging, confidence, persistence, awareness of skill development and workplace readiness.

Dr. Winkelmes has delivered hundreds of keynote presentations and workshops for colleges, universities and learning organizations in the United States and abroad. She has held senior leadership roles in teaching centers at Harvard University, the University of Chicago, the University of Illinois, the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and Brandeis University.

During this interactive webinar, faculty and student-support professionals will:

Become familiar with TILT research and how the framework works.Apply the TILT framework to examples from research studies.

The UA Teaching Academy will host a Coffee Talk exploring what capstone courses can accomplish beyond serving as one more final project.

Capstone courses are expected to help students synthesize their learning, demonstrate program outcomes, reflect on their growth and prepare for what comes next. During this conversation, participants will consider how capstones can support integrative learning, reflection, applied projects, undergraduate research, program-level assessment and career readiness.

The group will also discuss how programs can clarify the purpose of their capstones and design culminating experiences that help students connect their learning and development with their future pathways. Participants do not need to teach or be redesigning a capstone course to benefit from this session.

During this seminar use of ePortfolios will be discussed as tools/vehicles for student engagement and enhanced learning. We will explore all AAC&U “High-Impact Practices” while focusing on ePortfolios as a way to help faculty frame, and students articulate, student learning outcomes. The seminar will give examples of how ePortfolios can be used by faculty in traditional, service/experiential based and/or study abroad curricular contexts. The seminar will also provide ideas of how student ePortfolios can be useful as tools for assessment of course/dept SLOs; recruitment and retention efforts and/or helping students articulate their personal narratives or stories. In short, we will explore the many pedagogical uses of this educative apparatus!

The UA Teaching Academy will host a Coffee Talk exploring how collaborative presentation assignments can support student learning across a range of courses and disciplines.

Whether you have assigned collaborative presentations for years or are considering using one for the first time, this conversation will offer an opportunity to exchange practical tips and strategies. Participants will discuss common challenges, ways to navigate potential pitfalls and approaches for designing successful collaborative presentation assignments.

By drawing on the experiences of faculty teaching at different levels and in different departments, the group will consider how these assignments can be adapted to meet various course needs.
