In this one-hour workshop, novelist Maggie Nye Smith will teach participants how to build believable worlds in their fiction. World-building is a powerful tool that allows us to imagine a "this world other world" (per Suvin) that can examine the complex interplay between resources, power, and community--and ideally imagine a better alternative. But worlds are comprised of more than their people. They are host to and worked upon by a vast network of other-than-human (or metaphors for human) agents. It is the goal of this class to build and discover the non-human world at work within the fiction.
