From February 11 until March 1, the Gorgas House Museum invites visitors to see our new exhibit, The Life and Legacy of Sam S. May: Tuscaloosa’s Own George Washington Carver.”

Sam S. May was employed as a janitor at The University of Alabama from 1911 to 1941, studying and eventually conducting his own research and experiments in chemistry during his breaks and after hours. Known to students as “Dr. Sam” and the press as “Tuscaloosa’s little Carver,” May was not only respected within the chemistry department but received national attention for his efforts. After his death in 1941, he received many honors including a funeral at the University, a bronze plaque placed in Lloyd Hall by students in 1943, and the implementation of the Sam S. May Commitment to Service Award in 2000.
