Relationship-Rich Teaching with Peter Felten

The UA Teaching Academy invites faculty to an afternoon with Peter Felten, professor of history, executive director of the Center for Engaged Learning and assistant provost for teaching and learning at Elon University. Felten is the author or co-author of nine books on higher education and a nationally recognized expert on relationship-rich education, student engagement and the scholarship of teaching and learning. The event will include two interactive sessions:

12:30–1:45 p.m. — Connections Are Everything: How Trusting Relationships Drive Student Success

Explore how students’ relationships with faculty, staff and peers contribute to academic success and personal well-being. Drawing from nearly 750 interviews conducted at colleges and universities across the country, Felten will share practical and scalable approaches to creating learning environments where all students experience connection, care and inspiration—especially as generative AI reshapes higher education.
 

2–3 p.m. — Relational Feedback as a Tool for Learning, Connection and Well-Being

Discover how feedback on student work can strengthen learning, connection and well-being, even in large classes and in the era of generative AI. Participants will leave with practical strategies for providing meaningful instructor and peer feedback without significantly increasing grading demands.
