Empowering Autism Identification and Diagnosis in Primary Care – 8:30-11:30 a.m.

This three-hour workshop will provide primary care providers with practical tools and strategies to diagnose autism spectrum disorder for children with obvious symptomatology in their practice. A review of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual-5th Edition diagnostic criteria, hands-on application of those criteria, billing considerations and use of decision aids and other practice tools to streamline the process will be covered.

IEP and 504: Navigating the Process – 1-4 p.m.

This three-hour session will be an in-depth look at how parents can get the processes started for special education evaluation if their school system has not.  Discussions will include referrals before entering kindergarten as well as further grades.  Presenters will walk through the amount of time each part of the process may take, best practices for parents to make sure the school keeps moving forward in their evaluations, how to make sure all the evaluations the parent thinks are appropriate occur, what is required to be eligible, services that may be available,  what the delivery of services may look like, and what an actual IEP or 504 plan should look like as well.  A portion of the session will be working through real-life scenarios to determine how to navigate the possible processes and roadblocks.
