Dr. Rachel Stephens (UA Art and Art History) will deliver the lecture “Narratives of Removal in Nineteenth-Century Portraits.”

Although Indigenous people play a critical role in the history and culture of Tennessee, the artwork produced and celebrated by Euro-American settlers in the region omitted their presence, instead featuring landscapes removed of Native Americans. This lecture highlights the ways that these works offered tacit support for Indigenous removal. In considering the implications of these works in Native American histories, the works can be re-read with Indigenous people at the center.
