On February 8th, from 1:00 pm until 4:00 pm, the Gorgas House Museum invites visitors to join us for an afternoon of creativity and history. Discover the history of Valentine’s Day while crafting your own handmade cards!

Learn how the tradition of exchanging cards bloomed during the Victorian era, thanks to the rise of industrialization. From the lace-covered love letters to the biting verses of “Vinegar Valentines,” featuring cruel poems meant to insult the recipient, Valentine’s cards have a rich and surprising history!

Additionally, you will be able to find out more about the Victorian era through our parlor culture, which would have hosted nearly every important event in a person’s life. Parlors were the heart of the home, where families entertained guests, shared news, and engaged in relaxing pastimes. No gathering would be complete without tea, often joined by an array of pleasant treats such as finger sandwiches and a wide variety of pastries. These tea-time traditions reflected social status as well as providing an opportunity for conversation and even courtship, including the exchanging of Valentine’s cards.

Tea and light historical snacks will be provided.

Admission is free. Donations are welcome.
