Kickstart College works with Tuscaloosa school systems to bring eighth grade students from under-resourced and underserved regions in the Tuscaloosa community onto The University of Alabama campus. The program utilizes all members of the Carl A. Elliott Society with the intention to promote college attainability and resources for achieving higher education. Students receive a tour of campus, one-on-one interaction with Carl A. Elliott Society members, lunch provided through a campus dining hall, and an information session with student life representatives and pertinent departmental representatives (financial aid/scholarship, early college, college readiness, academic affairs, etc.). The goal of the program is to provide meaningful information to students transitioning into high school life. It is the intention of the Carl A. Elliott Society to market higher education as an attainable goal for all students and provide the resources needed to achieve this goal. 8th grade students will arrive at the UA Student Center via their own buses at 9 AM and be split into groups. Groups will rotate between attending student-run presentations in the Student Center, meet and greet with Elliott Society members in Lloyd Hall, and receiving a walking tour with Capstone Men and Women. At 11:30 AM, groups will meet at Lakeside Dining for a closing lunch, sponsored by the Elliott Society. Kickstart College is designed to give 8th graders from in and around Tuscaloosa a glimpse into life as a student at UA while allowing current members to build relationships with students in the community.
