Exhibition Opening “Holodomor Remembrance Month”

What is the Holodomor?
In the early 1930s, in what was known as Europe’s breadbasket, Stalin and the USSR committed genocide in Ukraine. An ancient farming nation was subjected to starvation, a horrific and torturous death. The Soviet authorities imposed exorbitant quotas for the amount of grain that the peasant farmers had to give over to the state. These quotas were impossible to meet. Brigades went house to house in the Ukrainian countryside, searching for hidden grain down to the last seed. They often seized any food they found, leaving families with nothing. Stalin ordered the sealing of the borders of Soviet Ukraine so that the population could not go in search of food where it was more readily available. At the same time, the Kremlin launched a campaign of repressions against Ukrainian cultural, religious, and political leaders.
The result was the famine genocide of 1932-1933, known in Ukrainian as the HOLODOMOR.
