The Environmental Council's Free Market works to to reduce waste and consumption on campus through mutual aid and community building. At these events, participants can bring in appropriate unwanted clothing to donate, and then browse and take home items donated by others. The swaps not only provide a way for people to refresh their wardrobe for free, but also help reduce clothes waste and extend the lifetime of clothes, which has many environmental benefits. Additionally, these swaps can help reduce the consumption of fast fashion on campus, which often exploits workers and increases the carbon emissions of the clothing industry. These events not only serve a practical purpose, but also provide an opportunity for people to connect with others on campus and build a sense of community.
