Award-Winning Historian Whitney Stewart to Present the Deep South Book Prize Lecture

Join the Summersell Center for the Study of the South and the Summersell Chair of Southern History for the 2026 Deep South Book Prize Lecture featuring Dr. Whitney Stewart, Executive Director of the Coastal Georgia Historical Society and winner of the 2026 Deep South Book Prize for This Is Our Home: Slavery and Struggle on Southern Plantations. Stewart's award-winning work reexamines Southern plantations through the lens of material culture, demonstrating how enslaved people created homes, families, and communities while enduring the realities of bondage. Her lecture will explore the experiences of enslaved people and challenge longstanding myths about the antebellum South.
